Rules for 2021 SCSA Year End Tournament Format

Each year the fall season winds up with a tournament for all teams except Dribblers and Trappers. This year we will play a round-robin tournament. Games will be played on Saturday & Sunday, Oct 30 & 31. Teams will be placed into pools of three or four teams based on regular season records.  The top three or four teams will play for the King of the Hill, the next best teams will play for President’s 1, and then President’s 2, with additional as needed. Each team will play every other team in its pool.  Some teams will need to play two games on a Saturday with a rest period between games. The winner will be decided by the record in the round robin as described below. These rules replace the tournament rules in the rule book.

The winning teams will be selected on the basis of the most total points after pool play is completed.  Scoring will be the same as the regular season: a team that wins a game will be awarded 3 points.  Teams that lose games will receive no points.  There will be no tied games.

Each game will be played to full time as designated for their division using the same substitution rules as used during the regular season.  If the game is tied at the end of regulation, there will be a Penalty Kick Shoot Out to determine the winner (no overtime, just PKs).

The penalty kick format will be the same as described on page 36 of the rule book:

1. The referee shall choose the goal at which all of the kicks will be taken.  For small sided games played on fields that do not have a designated penalty spot, penalty kicks will be taken from an eight-yard spot.

2.  The referee shall toss a coin, the team who wins the toss shall take the first kick.

3.  Both teams shall take five (5) kicks.

4.  The kicks will be taken alternately.

5.  If, before both teams have taken five kicks, one has scored more goals than the other team could, even if all were to complete its five (5) kicks, the taking of kicks shall cease.

6.  If, after both teams have taken five kicks, both have scored the same number of goals or have not scored any goals, the taking of kicks shall continue, in the same order, until such time as both have taken an equal number of kicks and one team has scored a goal more than the other.  This could be a single round of penalty kicks or several rounds of single kicks.

7.  Teams must use the players on the field at the end of the regular time before using any players from the sidelines.  It is important that players remain on the field at the conclusion of the overtime.  All players are to have a turn at the penalty kick before any player takes a second kick.

8.  You may use any of the players as your goalkeeper, including players off the bench and goalkeepers can be changed during the penalty kick rounds, before a penalty kick is taken.

In the event that teams are tied for the most points after pool play has completed, the following will determine the Champion until the tie is broken:

1. The team with the most wins.

2. Winner of the head to head game.

3. Highest number of net goals (goal differential).  The maximum goal differential is three goals per match (so a 15-2 win only gives the winning team +3 goals towards the tiebreaker–no need to run up the score!) Games finished with penalty kicks will be recorded as a one net goal differential.

4. Fewest goal allowed in the tournament.

5. Most shutouts in the tournament.

6. If the tie cannot be broken, the teams will be declared co-champions.

Coaches will receive tournament schedules at the October end-of-season meeting. They will also receive checks for the additional referee fees. All teams except Dribblers and Trappers should plan to play two games on Saturday and a third game on Sunday afternoon.

2021 Tournament Schedule

The complete tournament schedule is available here. Games are at Riverside all weather fields (rain or shine) for Shooters, Passers, Flyers and Wings. Strikers games are at Clear Creek field #14. Clear Creek may be closed by the park district if the weather is bad, which would necessitate rescheduling games.

No ties and no overtime in the tournament. If the score is tied after regular time, the game will go directly to penalty kicks, with the usual format of five kickers taken from players on the field. See your rulebook for more info.

Trophies for the team that finishes first in their tournament, and King of the Hill t-shirts for the winners of the KOH can be picked up at the press box at Riverside. We’ll have a spot for team photos, too. Second place trophies will be awarded only for tournaments of 4 teams.
